 Volunteer Testimonial  – June 2026

Volunteering at the Visitor Information Centre (VIC)

If you have any spare time and wish to help, advise and support both local residents and visitors to the town and district of Maldon I strongly recommend that you consider becoming a volunteer at the VIC.

I started volunteering back in 2019 after the decision was taken to close the Tourist Office in Wenlock Way and open a Visitor Information Desk in the foyer of Maldon Town Hall. Four years later and after all the disruptions caused by the pandemic the VIC desk can now be found in the Maeldune Heritage Centre and is open from 1100 to 1600 hours, Tuesday to Saturday.

My usual slot is on Thursday afternoons from 1330 to 1600 hours and whilst some sessions are busier than others I will end up carrying out a wide variety of tasks. These include giving out information leaflets, offering advice on local attractions, handing out bus timetables, liaising with the friendly staff at the Town Hall and on the desk of the Maeldune Centre itself, keeping the displays up to date and looking presentable and even distributing green and pink recycling bags! The good thing about being in the Maeldune Centre is that there are always other people around even if their main priority is not the VIC desk. Please do not be put off by the list. Training will be given, if required, and it is amazing how quickly volunteers fit into the role.

So why volunteer? Well apart from carrying out the duties outlined above you get to meet many different people both local residents and visitors and it is good to know that you are playing your part in helping to support and promote our town. The vast majority of visitors are very grateful for any help you are able to give and will leave with a thank you and a smile!

I have no regrets about volunteering and if I was able I would be happy to spend more time at the centre. I hope you will consider joining our team and contributing to the continued growth and success of the Maldon Visitor Information Centre.
