Artist statement

“The paintings displayed here show a shift away from naturalistic representation of colour and form by using more abstract forms, subject specific motifs and a colourful palette.

Using oils I work from memories of life to create lively paintings which are then overlaid with texture and pattern. Many of these paintings have been produced from initial random mark-making using washes of colour and allowing the paint to move in a serendipitous manner and then later imposing a structure and narrative to the work using significant forms and lines.

Initial mark-making . . . . . . . . . . . .leading to final painting

My aim with this work is to capture a sense of place and evoke feelings of joy and exuberance reflecting the feelings that I felt when painting them.”  Jan Bloomfield 2025
