Vincent Dawson – Artist Biography

Vincent Dawson is a contemporary British artist based in Maldon, Essex, whose work is rooted in Contemporary Impressionism. Inspired by the surrounding countryside and the ever-changing light of the Blackwater Estuary, he creates expressive paintings that celebrate atmosphere, texture, and the character of the landscape.

A formative period in Dawson’s artistic career was his time as a costume designer in Venice. Surrounded by the city’s rich architectural heritage and weathered surfaces, he developed a lasting appreciation for craftsmanship, colour, and texture. These experiences continue to influence his paintings, from their layered surfaces to their subtle architectural references.

Working primarily in acrylic and mixed media, Dawson uses broad brushes, palette knives, and natural sea sponges to build richly textured paintings that capture the essence of a place rather than simply its appearance. His work reflects both the timeless beauty of the Venetian cityscape and the tranquil landscapes of the Essex countryside, inviting viewers to experience familiar scenes through light, atmosphere, and expressive mark-making.
